Top 10 love stories

<br />

Esther Freud was named by Granta magazine as one of the 20 Best of Young British Novelists in 1993. Her books include Hideous Kinky (1992), Peerless Flats (1993) and Gaglow (1997). Her most recent novel is Love Falls (2007).

She named her top ten love stories for the Guardian. One novel on the list:

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

Possibly the greatest novel ever written. Tolstoy captures the rollercoaster arc of Anna's passion for Vronsky, and shows us the impossibility of her love ever being a match for what she's lost. The scenes between her and her small son whom she must abandon, are heartbreaking in their restraint, and it is these moments you remember, when Vronsky's ardour begins to fade.

Read about another novel on the list.

Anna Karenina also appears on Elizabeth Kostova's list of favorite books, James Gray's list of best books, Marie Arana's list of the best books about love, Ha Jin's most important books list, Tom Perrotta's ten favorite books list, Claire Messud's list of her five most important books, Alexander McCall Smith's list of his five most important books, Mohsin Hamid's list of his ten favorite books, Louis Begley's list of favorite novels about cheating lovers, and among the top ten works of literature according to Peter Carey and Norman Mailer. John Mullan put it on his list of ten of the best births in literature.

Top 10 gaffes on Facebook, Twitter and Google

<br />

I love the Cisco job one.

10. Job offer retracted on Twitter

Twitter user "theconner" was happy as she had just landed a well-paid job from internet company Cisco, but was not sure whether to accept. She tweeted the following: "Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work." However soon after the company rescinded the offer tweeting: "Who is the hiring manager? I'm sure they would love to know you will hate the work. We here at Cisco are versed in the web."

Top 10 at the Weekend Box Office

<br />

Notes:

  • Click on the chart to enlarge.

  • After two consecutive weekends of "too-close-to-call" results, we have a clear box office champ. In its fifth week, How to Train Your Dragon has reclaimed the #1 spot. The animated film continued to breathe fire at the cinemas, beating all newcomers -- including The Back-up Plan and Losers -- with a $15 million take.

  • It was a slow weekend at the box office -- which was down close to 20% compared to last year at this time, when the Beyonce Knowles-starrer Obsessed bowed to $28 million.

  • Reviews of Oceans and older movies not in the top ten can be found by clicking on the Film Reviews archive icon at left.

  • All figures are industry estimates. Actual figures are released on Monday.

Top 10 Algorithms in Data Mining

<br />

The authors here invited ACM KDD Innovation Award and IEEE ICDM Research Contributions Award winners to each nominate up to 10 best-known algorithms in data mining, including the algorithm name, justification for nomination, and a representative publication reference. The list was voted on by other IEEE and ACM award winners to narrow this down to a top 10 list. These algorithms are used for association analysis, classification, clustering, statistical learning, and much more.You can read the paper here.

Here are the winners:

  1. C4.5

  2. The k-Means algorithm

  3. Support Vector Machines

  4. The Apriori algorithm

  5. Expectation-Maximization

  6. PageRank

  7. AdaBoost

  8. k-Nearest Neighbor Classification

  9. Naive Bayes

  10. CART (Classification and Regression Trees)

The paper gives a brief overview of what the method is commonly used for and how it works, along with lots of references. It also has a much more detailed description of how these winners were selected than what I've said here.

The exciting thing is I've seen nearly all of these algorithms used for mining genetic data for complex patterns of genetic and environmental exposures that influence complex disease. See some recent papers at EvoBio and PSB. Further, lots of these methods are implemented in several R packages.

Top 10 Father and Son Writing Teams

<br />

Top 10 Father and Son Writing Teams presented by AbeBooks: "Sons who have followed in their literary fathers' footsteps and become authors are surprisingly common. Perhaps it's the genes? Perhaps it was inspiring to see father disappear off and hammer away at the typewriter for hour after hour. AbeBooks has selected the top 10 father and son author double-teams and there are plenty of big-hitters."

Top 10 takeaways from the Edinson Volquez PED Suspension

<br />

Former All-Star Edinson Volquez, a pitcher for the Cincinatti Reds that hasn't pitched since last June, was suspended for 50 games today after testing positive for a performance enhancing drug. It's the highest profile suspension since the Manny Ramirez Experience, but there are bigger things to know than that. Such as...

10) Seeing as Volquez can serve the suspension while on injury rehab, the only people who should care about this are the folks collecting the $133K+ fine

9) Dusty Baker deserves an apology; he doesn't kill young pitchers, he kills cheaters

8) Luckily, Josh Hamilton is hitting .205 with zero home runs, so Texas might not win that trade after all

7) The Baseball Prospectus guys that put Volquez on the cover must feel so embarrased right now

6) Volquez claims that the violation happened due to a desire to start a family, which shows an admirable if misguided commitment to equal parenting

5) Gave baseball fans a delightful morning of Twitter-fueled witch hunt speculation as to who was going to get nabbed

4) Puts Volquez under the same kind of permanent stain as Sergio Mitre and J.C. Romero, both of whom have never recovered from the shame, oh, the shame

3) Delivers an effective detriment against any player that thinks about cheating to get ahead

2) Proves that, by the numbers, the minor leagues are 16 times more dirty than the majors

1) Proves that, for the 15th straight year according to All Father Selig, there is no PED problem in baseball

Top 10 absurd classics

<br />

Michael Foley was born in Derry, Northern Ireland, but since 1972 he has lived in London, working as a Lecturer in Information Technology. He has published four novels, four collections of poetry and a collection of translations from French poetry, which have earned impressive reviews from the Guardian, New Statesman and New York Times. The Age of Absurdity is his first non-fiction book.

For the Guardian, he named a top ten list of books that best express the absurdity of the human condition. One title on the list:

Bouvard and Pécuchet by Gustave Flaubert

Bouvard and Pécuchet are humble copy clerks until Bouvard unexpectedly inherits money and the two friends decide to give up work and devote themselves to acquiring knowledge. They attempt to master in turn farming, chemistry, medicine, astronomy, geology, gymnastics, spiritualism, philosophy, religion and phrenology, in each case following the best contemporary expertise, but always ending in disaster and disillusionment. In their education phase they take in the children of a convict and subject them to the latest pedagogic techniques. Resolutely resisting improvement, the children wreck the garden, smash dishes in the kitchen, steal food and money, attack their philanthropic teachers and finally boil a pet cat alive in a cooking pot.

Read about the other books on the list.

Bouvard and Pécuchet
also appears on John Mullan's list of ten of the best unfinished literary works and John Sutherland's list of the best books about listing.

Top 10 Rejected Meanings of TAKS

<br />

This is an excerpt from a guest post that originally appeared on So You Want to Teach on January 25, 2008.

The timing seems just about right.

TAKS stands for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, but my understanding is that that was not the original acronym.

Without further ado, here are The Top Ten Rejected Meanings of TAKS:

10) Texas Accepts Kids' Suffering

9) That Aggravating Kidney Stone

8) Teachers against Knuckle Sandwiches

7) This Ain't Kansas, Scarecrow

6) Talking About Kama Sutra

5) Testing All Kids Simultaneously

4) Throw Away Knowledge, Sonny

3) Think Again, Kindergarten Students

2) Take Another Kid's Sanity

1) This Assessment Kinda Sucks

Top 10 Banned iPhone Applications

<br />

If someone wants to pay a grand for one, I say let him.

This app, nothing more than a 'glorified screensaver,' cost $999.99. Once downloaded, a glowing red gem would appear on the screen, followed by the words, "I Am Rich." Its iTunes description read: "The red icon on your iPhone or iPod Touch always reminds you (and others when you show it to them) that you were able to afford this. It's a work of art with no hidden function at all." Eight people actually purchased this functionless app before Apple removed it.

Top 10 Careers Damaged by Photographs

<br />

Photographs can be one of the most cherished items we possess but they can also be things that we wish never existed. This list looks at the latter and the damage that some pictures have had on 10 notable careers.

10
Mike Dukakis

Damaged Political Career

Dukakis-In-The-Tank

Mike Dukakis was the Governor of Massachusetts from 1975-1979 and the Democratic presidential nominee in 1988. During his presidential run, Dukakis was criticized for being too soft on defense. To prove that he took his countries defense very seriously, someone had a brilliant idea to get a picture of him in a tank. The plan was for the picture to become his key image for the campaign. However, it didn't quite turn out that way. The now famous photo op was such a disaster that the Dukakis tank picture was used in television ads for George H.W. Bush's campaign as evidence that Dukakis would not make a very convincing commander-in-chief. "Dukakis in the tank" is still used to describe a backfired public relations campaign.

Interesting Fact: In 1986, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had been photographed in a similar situation riding in a Challenger tank. For some reason, even though it was somewhat out of character the image was effective and helped her reelection prospects. You can see the picture here.

9
Shane Gibson

Damaged Political Career

An Narrowweb 300X512,0

In 2002 Shane Gibson was a member of the then ruling Progressive Liberal Party and was elected to the Parliament of the Bahamas as the Immigration Minister. In February 2007 after the death of Anna Nicole Smith, newspapers published photographs showing the famous model and Gibson in bed together embracing. Even though both were fully clothed, the photographs fired up a controversy because it appeared that a sexual relationship between the two had expedited Smith's application for permanent residency in the Bahamas. Gibson then resigned because of all the questions and rumors surrounding the nature of his relationship with Smith. When Gibson stepped down, he denied any wrongdoing and apologized to all persons who might have been offended by anything that he might have said or done that was perceived wrong.

Interesting Fact: Soon after Anna Nicole Smith died, the most popular taxi tour in the Bahamas was called (what else) The Anna Nicole Smith Tour. The sightseeing included the Hospital in Nassau where her son Daniel died, the home where she lived with Howard K. Stern and her five month old daughter, the Church where her funeral was and Lakeview Memorial Gardens where she and her son are buried.

8
Michael Phelps

Damaged Endorsement Career

Michael-Phelps-Weed-Bong

Michael Phelps is often credited as being the greatest swimmer and one of the greatest Olympians of all time. He has won 14 career Olympic gold medals, the most by any Olympian. In 2009, a photo by the British tabloid News of the World showed Phelps using a bong and smoking marijuana. Following the publication an investigation followed but due to lack of evidence Phelps was not charged. He was however suspended from swimming competitively for three months and Kellogg announced that it would not renew his endorsement contract. The cereal company stated that his recent behavior is "not consistent with the image of Kellogg." Cereal deals are usually worth around $250,000, but it is believed that Phelps' deal was much more. Phelps apologized said he demonstrated bad judgment and his behavior was regrettable.

Interesting Fact: Many of Kellogg's cereal boxes that were intended for a food bank with Phelps's picture on them disappeared after the he was dropped by Kellogg. It was confirmed that some were kept as souvenirs and others were showing up on e-Bay. Other Phelps endorsed companies like Subway, Visa and Omega (note the watch in the photo) believed Phelps was no different than other people of his generation who experiment or make youthful mistakes, and kept him on as a spokesperson.

7
Millard Tydings

Damaged Political Career

14 Tydings 1951

Millard Tydings was a United States Democratic Senator from Maryland from 1927 to 1951. In 1950, Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy claimed that there was Communist penetration into the federal government and military. Tydings responded and investigated by forming and overseeing the Tyding hearings. After the hearings he published a report denouncing McCarthy and his Communist claims as a hoax. When Tydings was running for re-election, McCarthy's staff distributed a picture of Tydings with Earl Browder who was the former leader of the American Communist Party. In reality Tydings had never met Browder before and the picture was actually a composite of a 1938 photo of Tydings (right) and a 1940 photo of Browder (left). The image is believed to have contributed to Tydings' defeat in his bid for reelection. You can see the pictures used to create the composite photo here.

Interesting Fact: Millard Tydings is the grandfather of actress Alexandra Tydings who is best known for her role as the Greek goddess Aphrodite on the popular TV series Hercules and on its spin-off Xena.

6
Vanessa Williams

Damaged Beauty Queen Career

Vanessa Williams Nude Penthouse-212X300

In 1983 Vanessa Williams became the first African- American to be crowned Miss America. Ten months after Williams was crowned, she received an anonymous phone call stating they had nude photos of her. The photos were taken in 1982 by Photographer Tom Chiapel when she worked as an assistant and makeup artist for Mount Kisco, New York. According to Williams, Chiapel wanted to try a new concept of silhouettes using two female models. He photographed Williams and another woman in several nude poses with some in simulated sexual positions. Williams believed the photographs were private and had been destroyed and never signed a release permitting the photos to be used. Days later, the publisher of Penthouse, Bob Guccione, announced that his magazine would publish the pictures in their September 1984 issue. When the photos hit the news stand, sponsors threatened to pull out of the upcoming 1985 pageant. Williams then resigned after pressure was put on her by Pageant officials. The title then went to the first-runner up Suzette Charles who is also African-American.

Interesting Fact: Williams is officially recognized today as "Miss America 1984? and Suzette Charles as "Miss America 1984b". The photos netted Bob Guccione a huge profit of $14 million. Williams filed a $500 million lawsuit against Chiapel and Guccione but eventually dropped the suit to avoid further legal battles choosing to move on with her life. Williams is quoted as saying, "the best revenge is success".

5
Kate Moss

Damaged Modeling Career

Medium Kate Moss Cocaine

Kate Moss is a British supermodel and has appeared on over 300 magazine covers. On September 2005, the Daily Mirror ran a front page and inside photos showing 31 year old Moss snorting cocaine at a West London recording studio. The images were captured during a Daily Mirror undercover investigation which revealed that Moss, who repeatedly denied using cocaine, was an avid user. She reportedly prepared up to 20 lines of coke on the back of a plastic CD and snorted five lines in 40 minutes. Within a short time after the photos were published, Moss lost major modeling contracts with several international companies including H&amp;M, Chanel and Burberry. Moss quickly issued an apology but stopped short of admitting drug use and said "I take full responsibility for my actions." In June 2006, after an investigation, British police dropped the charges for lack of evidence because photographs of alleged drug-taking are not admissible evidence in English courts.

Interesting Fact: Apparently the damage to her modeling career did not last long. In 2007, she came in 2nd on the Forbes top-earning models list, earning an estimated 6,500,00.00 ($9 million) in one year.

4
Chris Brown

Damaged Singing Career

Rihanna-Beat-Up1

Chris Brown is a very popular American singer and actor. On March 5, 2009, Brown was charged with assault and making criminal threats. The police report did not name the female in the incident but stated that a woman had "suffered visible injuries". Sources identified the alleged victim as his girlfriend and fellow R&amp;B singer Rihanna. A leaked photograph from the Los Angeles Police Department obtained by TMZ revealed Rihanna had sustained visible injuries. After the photo was released, many of Browns fans were disgusted and outraged. Following his arrest and the release of the photo, several of his commercial ads were suspended and his music was withdrawn from multiple radio stations. Brown also withdrew his appearance at the 2009 Grammy Awards. On June 22, 2009, Brown pled guilty to the felony assault. In exchange for his plea, Brown received five years probation and was ordered to stay fifty yards away from Rihanna, unless at public events, which then will be reduced to ten yards.

Interesting Fact: In a 2009 interview, Brown said that it is "tough" for him to look at the famous photograph released of Rihanna's battered face, which may be the one image to haunt and define him forever.

3
Gary Hart

Damaged Political Career

Gary Hart

Gary Hart was a United States Senator from Colorado and was the clear frontrunner for the Democratic nomination in the 1988 presidential election. Soon after he announced his candidacy for President, rumors began to circulate that Hart was having an extramarital affair. Hart responded to the rumors by daring the press and said "Follow me around. I don't care. I'm serious. If anybody wants to put a tail on me, go ahead. They'll be very bored." Previously to that meeting with the press, two reporters from the Miami Herald observed a woman who was identified as Donna Rice coming out of Hart's Washington D.C. townhouse. The paper was able to publish the story on the same day as Hart's challenge. Hart claimed that the reporters had no knowledge of exactly when the woman arrived or why she was there. Two days after that story, the Herald obtained a photograph of Rice sitting on Hart's lap in Bimini aboard a yacht ironically named Monkey Business. The celebrity tabloid National Enquirer immediately published the photograph and within five days, Hart dropped out of the Presidential race.

Interesting Fact: Because of the scandal, Donna Rice lost her job as a marketing representative for a pharmaceutical company in South Florida. She refused many opportunities offered to her after the scandal including an appearance in Playboy magazine.

2
Edison Chen

Damaged Entertainment Career

Chen-Chung

Edison Chen is a very popular Hong Kong-based Chinese Canadian film actor, singer and a pop icon. Chen has a total of 16 albums and has appeared in 28 films. In January 2008, Chen was involved in a widely publicized sex scandal when sexually explicit photographs of himself and several actresses became widely circulated on the Internet. The pictures were taken from Chen's laptop by a technician that was repairing it. There were approximately 1,300 pictures which included actresses Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan, Cecilia Cheung and many others. Mr. Chen had originally claimed that the photos were faked but then admitted to taking the photos. Chen then held a press conference where he said that he was ashamed and was leaving show business indefinitely. Following his apology Chen attended a rehab center in Utah, for "sex addiction."

Interesting Fact: Due to the photo scandal, the Google search engine rankings for 2008 resulted in Chen's Chinese name being the number 1 search term in China.

1
General Nguyen Ngoc Loan

Damaged Entire Career

Nguyen

The photo above was taken in 1968 and is one of the most famous images of the 20th century. The picture was taken by photographer Eddie Adams and won the Pulitzer Prize. It is also included in the 15 Incredible Historical Photographs list. Many have seen this photograph but most are not aware of the full story behind it. The man on the left shown executing a prisoner is South Vietnamese national police commander, General Lone. Before the execution it was reported that the prisoner had been the captain of a terrorist squad that killed the family of one of his deputy commanders. After shooting the prisoner, the general walked over to a reporter and said, "These guys kill a lot of our people, and I think Buddha will forgive me." When the photo was shown on television and appeared on the front pages of newspapers around the world, it was seen as an act of savagery and symbolized an unjustified war. Three months after the photo was taken, General Loan was severely wounded and taken to Australia for treatment. There was such an outcry against him that he was moved to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC. During the fall of Saigon in 1975 he asked for American help in fleeing with his family but was ignored and had to escape with his family in a South Vietnamese plane. Gen. Loan, whose right leg had been amputated, settled in northern Virginia, where he eventually opened a pizzeria restaurant. Loan was then forced into retirement when his identity was publicly disclosed. Eddie Adams (the photographer) stayed in touch and recalled that on his last visit to the pizza shop, he had seen written on a restroom wall "We know who you are, fucker."

Interesting Fact: Eddie Adams said this in a Time magazine interview: "The general killed the Viet Cong; I killed the general with my camera. Still photographs are the most powerful weapon in the world. People believe them, but photographs do lie, even without manipulation. They are only half-truths. What the photograph didn't say was, 'What would you do if you were the general at that time and place on that hot day, and you caught the so-called bad guy after he blew away one, two or three American soldiers?'" When General Loan died of cancer in 1998, Adams praised him and sent flowers with a card that read, "I'm sorry. There are tears in my eyes."

10 Collapsing Cities In A Free Fall

<br />

Miami boasts a popular South Beach club scene, Art Deco Architecture, and perhaps the best Cuban food in the country. But residents don't have much else to celebrate.

More than three years after the economy started its downward slide, the Miami metro area, like a handful of Sun Belt cities, still hasn't begun to recover. Median home prices in Miami have fallen 38% since its market peaked in the second quarter of 2007; the city's 11% unemployment rate is above the national average and has grown more than most of the 40 cities we surveyed.

Cities in the "Sand States" of Florida, California, Arizona and Nevada, where overbuilding was rampant, are also in trouble, claiming nine of the top 10 spots in our list of cities in free fall. In Las Vegas, Riverside, Calif., and Phoenix, median home prices have fallen 50%, 44% and 37% from their respective peaks. Jobs are vanishing. Though country-wide, employers added 162,00 jobs last month, Riverside gained 13% fewer jobs in February 2010 (the latest numbers available by metro) than it did the same month three years earlier. Tampa, Fla., saw a 10% drop, and Los Angeles added 9% fewer jobs over the same time period.

These cities are also slow to absorb their glut of unsold foreclosed homes, keeping recovery at bay.

"These were highly speculative housing markets," says Jonathan Miller, president of Miller Samuel, a Manhattan-based real estate appraisal firm. "In the markets that have unloaded a lot of foreclosed housing stock there's still a lot more coming."

Dow tops 11,000 on profit bets - Top 10 Investor Traps

<br />

The Dow industrials closed above 11,000 for the first time in almost 19 months on Monday as expectations of solid first-quarter earnings spurred buying in financial, energy and industrial sectors.

image Even so, some investors said stock prices already reflect lofty expectations for first-quarter results, with both the Dow and the S&amp;P 500 near 19-month highs.

"People fully expect that the earnings season is going to be very, very good, so people are trying to get in front of that," said Stephen Massocca, managing director of Wedbush Morgan in San Francisco.

The Dow closed above 11,000 after briefly topping that level on Friday for the first time since September 2008. The S&amp;P 500, which is up 7.2 percent since the start of the year, rose to within 1 point of the 1,200 level, a critical resistance level.

******************************************************************

CNBC has an article the Top 10 Investor Traps and it lists at number 10 Leveraged Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs). It concludes Given their volatility, these funds typically are not suitable for most retail investors. Any observer of this blog knows of the several leveraged ETFs that RSI has recommended. All I can say is that I agree they are not the best funds for long term investors and should be relegated to shorter term trading. I certainly understand if someone avoids these RSI recommendations, however the objective evidence argues otherwise. Including short funds enhances the performance over the portfolio of long only funds. A further enhancement occurs when the single leveraged, both long and short. are added to the mix. Likewise the double or ultra funds add to performance, but the addition of triple leveraged funds hurts performance. Believe me, I don't like the leveraged funds, but I have to rely on evidence based analysis and swallow my apprehension and go with RSI's picks.

No RSI picks today .... catch you later.

Reward Showbiz: The 10 most pointless celebrity books and TV shows

<br />

I'm a great follower of reward showbiz ( Madame Arcati 2010) - gigs bestowed upon slebs only because they have a name. Many showbiz or media projects are dreamt up simply as an excuse to get a star to front them. Such projects have three essential characteristics: 1) a star; 2) a journey, quest or list; 3) pointlessness. Here's my latest top 10 rewardees:

1. Joanna Lumley for Joanna Lumley's Nile, a new four part series on ITV1 starting this week. No earthly reason why the Nepalese goddess should be associated with this river, but it's an opportunity to wallow in cultivated mellifluousness as she bears her polished teeth at familiar sights - such as a lookalike camel - in various gurnings of rapture. Oh look, there's a pyramid.

2. Quentin Letts for his throwaway read 50 People Who Buggered Up Britain. The Daily Mail's right-wing attack dog is a professional frother who appears to favour a return to Feudalism and the use of the rack. An utterly pointless addition to the listerature genre - he is after all part of the problem.

3. Michael Palin and his various TV/book tie-in travels, from the Sahara to his Hemingway Adventure. Nothing in Palin's career quite prepared us for the unedifying sight of a perfectly credible comic actor turning into a Phileas Fogg freebie tart. If he has shed new light on any part of the globe do let me know.

4. Andrew Marr for History of Modern Britain. Any excuse to get this gesticulating barker on the box. Rest assured, his "history" will be referenced by no serious scholar; it's just a loafer's guide to event whatnots, the sort of crap Reader's Digest might have once published for leisurely reads.

5. Jeremy Paxman for The Victorians: Britain through the Paintings of the Age (book and TV series). What does he know about art? The book was substantially written by someone else in any case. A great vanity juggernaut to keep a familar face on the screen.

6. Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman for Long Way Round: TV series and book. A chance to ogle at two leather clad arses in different international locations. Shamelessly the book's publisher writes on Amazon "The fact that those men are figures with notable film connections ... may be the reason the book got written ... but so what?" How sad are the punters?

7. Richard Hammond for all his TV shows but Top Gear. TV looks for any excuse to have him either blowing up things or testing things that may blow up, all because he nearly got himself killed once. Each promise of doom leaves us cruelly tantalised.

8. Sophie Dahl for Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights (book/TV show). A Nigella Lawson copycat - famous surname + food erotica. The book boasts Dahl's "Matisse-like line drawings" destined for no public exhibition. Only two years ago or so she was presented as the great white hope of literature after a spell as a waif on catwalks.

9. Peter and Dan Snow for 20th Century Battlefields (book/TV series) - lanky father and son become visibly excited in the historical presence of slaughter. Where's a swingometer when you need one?

10. JLS - for all those fucking endless music rundown shows they've been fronting since they didn't win The X Factor but went on to become the show's biggest boy band stars. Testicle hugs and downward spastic finger thrusts conduct their guides to Michael Jackson and others. The tiny one especially requires treatment.

Top 10 photography blogs

<br />

The reason I like blogging is simple. I learn things. Be it pastor Geoffrey Whitt who likes to masturbate in public, or the tendency of religious folks to use religion as a weapon in divorce. Religion, and the odd people who stray from the path, fascinates me. Each odd story is a unique lesson in human failure. I learn from each one. But if left to my own devices, I read photography blogs.

When it comes to "this or that", this post is about that photography. This is my top 10 list of photography blogs. Enjoy.

[Flashback Friday TOP 10] 10. United Skull of America

<br />

Flashback Friday is a weekly countdown of the fan selected top 52 skulls of Skull-A-Day 1.0. Each week I'll be posting an original skull along with some additional commentary in order from lowest to highest rated, with the #1 skull appearing in the last week of year 3 of the project...

#8: 10. United Skull of America

It was only when I finished this that I thought about the fact that I had used a map of the continental US only and had left out Alaska &amp; Hawaii. I felt pretty bad about it, but in the midst of the project I didn't have the time to return to it and try again with all 50 states. Finally last year I free moment and set to the task, and lo and behold I think the results were even better, go figure!...

This version is available as a limited edition silkscreen poster.

I even made a 9 foot tall wooden version of the original skull for my exhibition: After Life, that was at Quirk Gallery in Richmond, Virginia...

I plan on one day making the revised skull that way as well! So if you're interested in having an installation of the full 50 states as a skull in your museum, school, office, or gallery please get in touch!

Top 10 Coaching Scandals In College Sports History

<br />

College athletics makes up a significant part of not only your college experience but of the national sports obsession. Coaches are paid millions of dollars and receive hefty bonuses for performing well in national championships and bringing major attention and funding to their schools.

And while the players still have to go to class to make certain grades, they're often viewed as rock stars on campus and by the general public, not to mention professional sports teams and recruiters. With all of this attention comes a lot of temptation, too. Here are the top 10 coaching (and player) scandals in college history.

(thanks Kaitlyn)

Top 10 Unexpected Hangover Cures

<br />

Eggs

Eggs contain cysteine, an amino acid that steps up liver function and allows your body to break down remaining booze toxins faster.

Ginseng

Popular in Eastern medicine -- where it's used for a myriad of conditions including improving energy levels, boosting memory and helping the immune system -- ginseng may relieve the lethargic feeling that accompanies many hangovers. Taken before the party, ginseng can help your body speed up the processing of alcohol. If you take it the next day, ginseng can ease that tired feeling by giving you more energy.

Sports drinks

They're used by athletes to rehydrate after a rigorous workout, so why not slurp a sports drink as a hangover cure? Although some particularly queasy bellies may be upset by the sugar content, sports drinks can go a long way in your body's post-booze recuperation. They're full of potassium, minerals and carbohydrates, which will help relieve dehydration as it gives your blood sugar level a boost.

Fruit juice

Fruit juice contains vitamins and sugar, which you'll need if you want to replenish your lost nutrients and give your body an energy boost. Just make sure you're drinking juice made from real fruits (as opposed to artificial flavors).

Vitamins

Vitamin B will aid in metabolizing alcohol and will help your alcohol-constricted blood vessels dilate. Vitamin C nudges the liver into breaking down alcohol. Just make sure you don't take too much vitamin C -- an overdose can cause diarrhea. In both cases, the vitamins are most effective if taken before a drinking binge, but may also bring relief if you take them in the morning.

Painkillers

"Take two aspirin and call me in the morning." Popping a painkiller before bed is a remedy that some drinkers swear by, but you need to give pause before you proceed. Acetaminophen, found in Tylenol, can cause extreme liver damage when there's already alcohol in your bloodstream, so never use it as a hangover cure. Aspirin and ibuprofen (the main ingredient in Advil) can be hard on the stomach and possibly make your hangover worse.

Water

Since many hangover symptoms result from simple dehydration, water is perhaps one of the most effective hangover cures of all. It will not only work as a pre-drinking measure against a hangover, but it will also help you recover when you're in full-blown hangover misery.

Dairy

Even though dairy products contain B vitamins, which are helpful in reducing hangover symptoms, it's probably not a good idea to be guzzling a glass of milk when your stomach is already feeling queasy. Stay away from the dairy until your insides feel more stable.

Greasy food

Stay away from that drive-through fast food window. The sticky quality that allows greasy food to line the stomach can help prevent hangovers, but when you're already hung over, fatty foods can be a no-no. The greasiness can make your stomach feel even worse.

Coffee

Caffeine may wake you up for a bit, but once the effect wears off, you'll crash and end up more tired than you were before. Plus, don't go for the water-sapping effect of caffeine if your body is already in need of hydration.
